A Perspective on the 2022 Met Gala: Gilded Glamour

By Paris Weems

The Seven Hills School — The Met Gala is the most iconic night in fashion every year, but it can also be a hit or miss with the theme. This year’s theme was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” a continuation of last year’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” While last year’s gala was miss after miss, this year, there were a few outfits that blew viewers away, along with the ones that missed by miles.

Two words: Blake Lively. She was one of the co-hosts of this year’s Met, and she easily won the night. Lively always wins with her Met outfits every year because she pays attention to detail and stays on theme. This year, her dress was inspired by the Statue of Liberty, which was built during the Gilded Age. When the Statue of Liberty was first built, it was covered in hundreds of copper sheets, but in 1906, it turned green, which is known as a patina. Lively wore a copper Versace gown with a long train and opera gloves to match. Lively then made jaws drop when she revealed that her gown was reversible. She revealed a lovely copper and turquoise dress and new matching opera gloves. On the train, there were depictions of constellations. Lively had custom Lorraine Schwartz earrings and a tiara and paired the look with a Judith Lieber bag. I have yet to meet a person who did not like the look, and if there are people out there that don’t, they are simply wrong.

Several other looks hit the carpet. For the first time, all five Kardashian/Jenner sisters and their mother Kris hit the carpet together. To be honest, the Kardashians are not known for sticking to the theme every year. Sure, they look great in the outfits each year but neglect to stay on theme. This year, Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner were the only ones who kind of stayed on theme. Kimberly wore Marilyn Monroe’s famous dress that she wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to John F. Kennedy. It was one icon paying homage to another icon. It was iconic, of course.

Kendall wore a black Prada gown with a ruffled skirt and a sheer top. She also bleached her eyebrows to match the theme. As she always does every year, Jenner looked great, and she is getting better at actually learning how to match the theme.

Now this will get a bit controversial, but I was not a fan of Kylie Jenner’s outfit. The story behind her outfit choice was beautiful, but it completely missed the theme. Jenner wore an Off White wedding gown, a brand created by her late friend and fashion designing icon Virgil Abloh. While the message is beautiful, the outfit was a miss.

Kourtney Kardashian attended her first Met with her fiancé, drummer of Blink-182, Travis Barker. Kardashian wore what she described as “a deconstructed version of his outfit.” The couple wore looks created by Thom Browne. Kourtney’s look was not my favorite compared to Kendall or Kim, but I did not hate it. Kris’ outfit was just okay.

Khloé Kardashian also attended her first Met and wore a gold Moschino dress. The look was meh. It did not fit the night’s theme, and I am honestly not surprised. Though the Kardasians are not always on theme, they do usually find ways to make the night iconic.

Two people were notably missing from the night, and you could feel the emptiness: Zendaya and Rihanna. Year after year, Rihanna leaves everyone speechless in the best way with her looks at the Met Gala. She did not attend this year’s Met because she is in Barbados with her family, either due soon to give birth or already given birth to her daughter, whose father is her boyfriend, rapper A$AP Rocky.

Zendaya also did not attend the gala last year due to scheduling conflicts with her show “Euphoria.” I was definitely disappointed that neither of the icons attended because they would have 100% looked better than everyone else there.

The 2022 Met Gala was one for the books. I liked this theme way better than “Camp: Notes on Fashion in 2019” and “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion in 2021.” Several people blew me away, and quite a few were so boring that they should not be invited again. I am excited to see the theme for next year, and hopefully, everyone in the Kardashian/Jenner family will actually be on theme.
